Brain Health: Water and Hydration
How does water and hydration affect brain health?
In our previous blog, we explained how nutrition including the gut microbiome, plays an important role in brain health. Next, we will look at how water and hydration play a role in ensuring healthy and optimal neurological functioning.
Approximately 75% of the human brain consists of water. The brain requires water to obtain the energy that it needs to function. Water is required for the production of neurotransmitters and hormones, hence water is vital for communication and signaling processes between the brain and the rest of the body. Moreover, water eliminates toxins and accumulated waste products from the brain. Furthermore, adequate hydration is associated with improved concentration, memory, focus, mental resilience, and information processing.
Research studies have shown that various cognitive functions are impeded with dehydration and symptoms such as irritability, headaches, poor information recall, and reduced attention span have been associated with a lack of water intake and hydration.
It is recommended that adults drink 2-3 litres of water a day. However, additional servings of water should be consumed depending on one's daily activity, age, types of medication used and climate conditions. Hence the amount of water required to keep your brain healthy varies from person to person. However, keep in mind that excessive water intake can cause water intoxication and may lead to brain dysfunction. Consult with your doctor if you are concerned about your water intake.
You might be wondering, "Should I only drink water to stay hydrated?"
Firstly, note that when we are referring to "water" we are referring to natural still water, and not carbonated or flavoured water. Secondly, water is best for staying hydrated because it does not contain calories, additives, artificial ingredients, sugars or caffeine. However, tea, coffee and juices can be consumed to stay hydrated. Nonetheless, remember that too much caffeine, sugar, artificial ingredients, and excess calories can cause health issues, so drink these beverages in moderation😉
